History

The tall ship program was started in 2003 by science teachers at Manhattan Middle School.  The focus of the program is to bring students from a land locked state to the ocean to learn about this incredible resource that covers 75% of our planet.  Hundreds of Manhattan students have traveled on board a tall ship learning about marine biology while also learning to navigate and set sails.  Students return from this trip with a unique experience that often helps to shape their lives through developing new friendships, learning new skills and challenging themselves to try new activities.

Los Angeles Marine Institute

The Los Angeles Maritime Institute (LAMI) serves to empower youth to discover their greater potential through extraordinary at-sea experiences aboard educational sailing vessels built to train and equip young people with 21st century leadership skills, and inspire maritime and STEM career paths.

Cabrillo Aquarium

At the end of our trip, we will visit this aquarium.  Students will have the opportunity to learn even more about the marine life they have been living among the past week.  We will visit tide pools, examine a variety of crab species, use microscopes to examine plankton and test water quality.  Students will also have the chance to walk around the aquarium and learn at their own pace.
